What is Dylan Day?

By cproctor - Posted on 16 May 2011

Wednesday is Dylan Day, a Westlake tradition. If you don't know about the tradition, or if you don't know much about Bob Dylan, here are a few links. You'll have more fun if you know what's going on!

Dylan Day was started a long time ago by a teacher named Bill Martin. I've had a chance to work with him on a few projects, and I can tell you he's one of the most inspiring people I have met. When he retired from Westlake, he wrote an essay explaining the origin of Dylan Day. You can read it here:
A History of Dylan Day by Bill Martin.

So what about Bob Dylan? US history in the twentieth century has been told and shaped by our music, and Dylan has been one of the most important voices in this conversation. His songs are about real people and real problems--he sings about war, poverty, racism, love, and everything else shaking up America from the '60s to today. If you want to read more, check out his Wikipedia page.

At Dylan Day, we'll hand out lyrics to help you sing along, but it would be helpful to have heard the songs before too. Here are a few of the songs we'll be singing; you should be able to find them on Grooveshark or another music service of your choice. Have fun, and don't forget to buy a Dylan Day T-Shirt!
